Orthodontics is an area of dentistry that deals with the alignment of the teeth and repositioning of the jaws. The aim is to create a bite that ensures you can function well in addition to cosmetically improving tooth position. Various treatment options for crooked teeth and irregular jaw positioning exist. In general, they all act to move teeth in a certain way by placing force on them over a period of time.

Broadly speaking, there are two treatment types. The first is known as a fixed appliance, which is a type of device that is attached to the teeth for a period of time to change their position. Braces are the most commonly known type of fixed appliance. Alternatively, you may be offered a removable appliance such as clear aligners, which can be taken out of the mouth and replaced at different intervals to alter the position of the teeth. The type of treatment will depend on the individual and will be tailored to their specific needs after thorough evaluation. Orthodontics may be carried out by a general dentists with additional training or you may be referred to a specialist orthodontist for management and treatment.
